INTRODUCTION

Hi, STARFLEET Shuttlecraft Operations Command (ShOC) is the branch of STARFLEET: The International Star Trek Fan Association, Inc. which oversees the day-to-day operations of the chapters-in-training (shuttles) within the fleet. We make sure that the shuttles have the necessary information, paperwork, and stamina to make it to becoming a fully commissioned chapter (starship/space station) in STARFLEET. Shuttle Operations Command

PRE-LAUNCH COUNTDOWN

"T minus 9 months..."

Starfleet requires a minimum of five (5) members for a shuttle. By the time you achieve Starship status, that number will need to grow to ten (10) members in good standing. For counting purposes, no more than two (2) people from any given Starfleet family may be counted toward the 5 member requirement. A master copy of the STARFLEET Application is included in the S.T.A.R.T. package to assist you in gaining new members. Both the Commanding Officer (CO) and the Executive Officer (XO) must be of at least 18 years of age and successfully complete STARFLEET Academy's Officer Training School (OTS). A master copy of the STARFLEET Academy Application is included in the S.T.A.R.T. package to assist you and your members in applying to the Academy. Both choosing a name for your chapter and where you hold your meetings can be very important. Choosing a name like the Shuttle Goofball or choosing a location which is very inaccessible may discourage people from joining.

Once your group has chosen a name and the type of fictional STARFLEET vessel they want, you must write to the Department of Technical Services (DTS). The DTS is the branch of STARFLEET that keeps track of Vessel Names, Ship Types, NCC-numbers, and the like. You must submit your proposed name and ship type and request a letter of approval. Please provide a prioritized list of three (3) names, in case your first choices are already taken. Shuttle Operations Command (ShOC) is the branch of STARFLEET responsible for the launching and monitoring of shuttles. When you write to ShOC, you need to include copies of the DTS letter you received in addition to the copies of OTS Diplomas for the CO and XO. Also, you may need to request a Vessel Registration Request (VRR) form. (A VRR is included in the S.T.A.R.T. package for your convenience.)

Complete the VRR and formally petition your Mother ship for Shuttle Status. The CO of the mother ship will use the 2 stamped envelopes that you've provided to mail your materials to the RC and to ShOC. A money order for $5.00 (U.S. funds) made out to STARFLEET is required for STARFLEET processing fees. It is a good idea to photocopy and date any materials you send in, as well as mail a copy to your Regional Shuttle Coordinator (dpb@gci.net). Once your signed forms are received and approved at ShOC HQ, your shuttle can start its 9 month probation period. During this period, your shuttle must grow and show signs of improvement to STARFLEET HQ to prove it can stand and function on its own as a full-fledged chapter. When you receive your confirmation from ShOC, you are launched!
