INTRODUCTION
The Relay Station concept is based on the ST:TNG episode "Aquiel" in which only 2 Starfleet Officers manned a Relay
Station.
The Relay Station (also known as Pre-shuttle) program is designed to provide 1 or more Star Trek fans an affiliation to
Starfleet, Int'l when the group does not otherwise qualify for shuttle or starship status. The program provides unlimited time to
satisfy the requirements for upgrade to shuttle or starship, should the group wish to pursue those goals.
A Relay Station may be formed by a member who lives too far away from a shuttle or ship to attend meetings, from a member
whose work schedule precludes him/her from attending meetings, by members who have left a ship due to irreconcilable
differences, and by shuttles whose membership has dropped below shuttle requirements.
PART ONE: RELAY STATION OPERATIONS
Membership Requirements
1. The Commanding Officer (CO) must be a Starfleet member and must pass Officer Training School (OTS) within 1 year of Relay Station petition. The CO must be at least 18 and a legal adult in his/her community. The rank of the CO will begin at Lieutenant or at his/her current rank if higher.
2. Like a SFMC Strike Group the minimum membership requirement for a Relay Station is one.
Administration
1. The member wishing to start a Relay Station shall petition the Regional RS-Ops on a form provided by RS-Ops. The form
will be accompanied by a statement of short term and long term goals and a photocopy of the CO's Starfleet membership
certificate. A copy of the CO's OTS certificate must be providedwithin 1 year of initial petition. While awaiting Starfleet
membership materials the crew may begin setting up the Relay Station under the guidance of the mothership.
2. RS-Ops will assign a Relay Station number and provide a checklist to the CO on which to chart the progress of the Relay
Station through the shuttle process to starship status.
3. RS-Ops will consult with the Relay Station CO to determine which Mothership the RS will be attached to. Although the
RS-Ops will oversee the development of the Relay Station, the Mothership will be responsible for providing information on
Starfleet activities and Regional and local events. The Mothership will also keep backup records of the Relay Station
membership.
4. There is no time limit for a Relay Station to become a shuttle. Once the Relay Station has upgraded to shuttle status,
however, the shuttle will be bound by Starfleet Int'l timelines for satisfying all requirements through to starship status.
5. The CO of the Relay Station shall provide monthly reports to both the RS-Ops and the CO of the Mothership. These
reports may either be mailed or be submitted on-line.
PART TWO: UPGRADING TO SHUTTLE AND/OR SHIP STATUS
1. Should the Relay Station members wish to upgrade, the CO will contact RS-Ops and the CO of the Mothership and
submit a copy of the VRR to both for approval, as per current ShOC guidelines.
2. Upon approval of the VRR, the RS-Ops will turn the administration of the shuttle to the CO of the Mothership.
3. The new shuttle will then work with the Mothership, the Regional Coordinator (sakaari@shaw.ca), Department of Technical Services (dts@sfi.org), and Shuttle Ops (shoc@sfi.org) to get the paperwork processed and a name approved.
4. When the shuttle satisfies all requirements for becoming a starship and is commissioned, the Mothership shall turn over all
shuttle records and administration to the CO of the new starship.
