SFMC GOLD NEBULAFor actions involving risk to your ownj
life while saving the life of another. During the last week of November
2005, at approximately 11:30 am on a rainy morning Norma Langois was a
participant in the following event. Norma was on her regular commute
to work, she noticed a later model Volkswagon Van on the side of the road
with smoke coming out the back of the vehicle. She pulled over and parked
her car about 5 car lengths away. Her intent was to offer the use of her
celluar phone to the driver. She approached the van on the drivers side. As
she got even with the back of the van she "noticed a small bit of yellow out
of the corner of her left eye". She quickly moved to the driver's side of
the vehicle and grabbed the gentleman in her left arm. She pulled him out of
the vehicle and away before she "pushed (them) both to the ground just as
the vehicle erupted in flame". She tells me that the memory of "the smell
and debris" still lingers with her. When it was over (she thinks it was
about a minute), she helped the man up and got back into her car just as the
fire department arrived. A bystander had called 911 Dispatch sometime during
the incident to alert the Emergency Medical Service (EMS).
Devin Brown was able to identify the vintage of VW Van from a description
of the van's bumpers, which had rounded corners, as opposed to squared off
corners. He explained this model of VW Van does have a problem with fires
due to the lack of a firewall between the engine and the fuel tank (which is
about 1 to 2 feet in front of the engine). As Norma's approach to the
vehicle was in direct line of an internal fire for which she had little
indication other than smoke and a last second glimpse of color. Her
immediate response saved both herself and the driver from an imminent risk
of serious injury or death. Had she been just a moment later in her approach
the vehicles bursting into flame would have caught Norma in its blast.
Given under my hand, this 17th Day of April, terran year, 2006.
